Apple CarPlay May Soon Support Third-Party AI Assistants Like ChatGPT

Apple is reportedly preparing to expand CarPlay by allowing third-party AI assistants to support voice interactions in a future update, according to Bloomberg. This change would enable developers such as OpenAI and Google to bring CarPlay-compatible versions of their AI apps, including ChatGPT and Gemini, into Apple’s in-car platform.

Currently, Siri handles most voice-based tasks in CarPlay, such as navigating routes, sending messages, or controlling music. While Siri remains the default assistant, third-party AI tools could soon help with more complex or open-ended requests that go beyond Siri’s typical capabilities.

Although drivers can already use AI apps through their smartphones via Bluetooth, native CarPlay integration would offer a smoother experience. However, Apple is maintaining certain limits. These external assistants will not be able to replace Siri or use their own wake phrases. Instead, users will need to manually open the AI app within CarPlay before interacting with it, which may reduce hands-free convenience. This approach suggests Apple intends to keep Siri at the center of the CarPlay experience.

The move aligns with Apple’s broader AI strategy. The company recently announced that Google’s Gemini technology will help power future versions of Siri and Apple Foundation Models, which support Apple Intelligence. Apple’s redesigned Siri, introduced alongside Apple Intelligence in 2024, is expected to offer improved contextual understanding, cross-app functionality, and the ability to perform actions on a user’s behalf—features already common in advanced AI systems like Gemini.

Industry reports indicate Apple may eventually use Gemini models to turn Siri into a more conversational assistant. If that happens, CarPlay could become a natural extension of this enhanced voice experience.

Opening CarPlay to third-party AI reflects Apple’s gradual shift toward a more flexible ecosystem while still prioritizing its own assistant. For drivers, the update could mean greater choice in how they interact with their vehicles—without removing Siri as the primary interface.
